Another month rolls by and the longest beta test I have ever participated in continues. Some of the more interesting things that have occurred recently are Client revamps which change the layout somewhat, graphic improvements, homepage tweaks and the newest thing bound to polarize people into 2 groups – Badges. Most have been for the betterment and to be honest that’s no mean feat considering the huge range and resource differences that a singular chat client release must cover. Think about it for a moment. This program must operate relatively the same over a variety of OS systems whilst being fully compatible to them all. It must be able to run on machines ranging from grannies hand me down pc through to laptops going upward to bleeding edge PC’s. That’s no small feat.

Keeping that in mind people should be a little more open to change in how the client runs and moves. As always the tech support do listen and participation in the form new release area is the only way you can be sure that someone in the code monkey department is listening.

However...Far from being a glowing polished piece, I believe this client still has a long way to go in as far as cross platform user interfaces go. To that end is it really important to be developing such trivialities as badges, when folks are still experiencing slow and less than stellar performances that can handle most normal 3d games for breakfast. Case in point, a machine that can handle say …Command and Conquer 3 or World of Warcraft should, if theory holds true, handle a basic chat client with ease. Facts remain that this basic chat client is still a very resource hungry application.

Badges it would seem are just another form of price gouging revenue cash cows for a company that already makes real world money from us hand over fist. Let’s not even bring up the fact that now people will be more interested in visiting you merely for a small square pixel badge rather than meeting you. Are we now at the stage where quantity of shiny stuff seems to be the more important quality of the client program? Hard to say but its one that bears watching. Especially when, that creative talent could be better spent on improving the catalog and forums. We shall see what next month brings.

How to Throw a Green Fun St. Patrick's Day Party

St Patrick's Day is the perfect time to put on your leprechaun hat and serve up the green beer.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Shamrock Decorations
  • Green Cookies And Candy
  • Green Shamrock Mylar Balloons
  • Irish Beers
  • Movies
  • Green String Lights
  • CDs Of Irish Pub Songs
  • Lime Jell-O®
  • Green Balloons

Step1
Think green and silly when it comes to decorations. Put up green cutouts of shamrocks and leprechauns on the walls and in the windows. Blow up a few dozen green balloons and pile them into corners.

Step2
Tie a few green mylar shamrock balloons to the front of the house or the front gate and screw a green "party" lightbulb into the outside light so that your guests will know where the party is.

Step3
String green Christmas tree lights (available year-round via the Internet) across the ceiling.

Step4
Place a big rock (or fake papier maché rock) right inside the entrance with a sign that says, "BLARNEY STONE - KISS FOR GOOD LUCK."

Step5
Pass out "Kiss me, I'm Irish" buttons to your guests as they arrive. Make everyone wear them.

Step6
Create a table of green munchies, including green cookies, green M&Ms and chips with guacamole.  Serve them out of green plastic leprechaun hats.

Step7
Set tables with green tablecloths, napkins and cups and sprinkle shamrock confetti on tables and other flat surfaces.

Step8
Serve both a traditional Irish beer (such as Guinness) and a cheaper light beer that you can dye green with food coloring; don't forget the green Jell-O shots!

Step9
Hold a limerick contest - after people have had a few drinks - and award a silly prize to the winner.

Step10
Buy a CD of classic Irish pub songs and have it playing in the background and/or rent the horror movie "Leprechaun" and have it playing (with the sound muted) on your TV.

Tips & Warnings

  • Beers such as Guinness are meant to be served at room temperature, but not what Americans consider room temperature. Guinness should be served at about 60 degrees F.
  • You may be able to order a keg of green beer from your local brewery or liquor store.
  • Make sure that either you or someone you trust is a designated driver. Give rides to anyone who has had too much to drink, and tell them that you will deliver their cars to them in the morning.
